Mexico eating

NSP has been reported from the southeastern coast of the U.S., the Gulf of Mexico, and New Zealand (Ishida et al., 1996). Few cases of NSP occur in the U.S. because of comprehensive monitoring programs that periodically sample shellfish and the waters where shellfish are harvested. If shellfish or seawater samples are contaminated with brevetoxins, harvesting is stopped until the shellfish have depurated the toxin and are again safe to eat. 

NSP has been identified outside the typical geographic area where K. brevis is found. In 1987, an unusual movement of ocean currents carried a red tide from the Gulf of Mexico to the coast of North Carolina (Morris et al., 1991). People there were unaware of the risks associated with eating shellfish during a red tide, and an outbreak of NSP associated with eating contaminated shellfish occurred in November. 

Brevetoxin B is one of a family of polyethers found in a sea creature (a dinoflagellate Gymnodinjum breve, hence the name) which sometimes multiplies at an amazing rate and creates red tides around the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico. Rsh die in shoals and so do people if they eat the shellfish that have eaten the red tide. The brevetoxins are the killers. The many ether oxygen atoms interfere with sodium ion (Na+) metabolism. 

The closest substance to LSD that occurs in nature is a chemical called ergine, or lysergic acid amide, found in the seeds of certain morning-glories. Indians in southern Mexico were eating morning-glory seeds for ritual purposes before the Spanish arrived, and some still use them today. 

Some Indians in Mexico have used peyote since before recorded history, making long pilgrimages to the desert to collect it, then eating it in elaborate ceremonies. When the Spanish conquered Mexico, the Roman Catholic Church tried to stamp out peyote use, calling it sinful and diabolic, but to no avail. In the late 1800s the use of peyote spread northward to Indians in the United States, who invented new rituals around it. The vegetarian community in Albuquerque cried fowl when 20 Carrots Cafe added chicken and turkey to their menu and lost their distinction for being the only vegetarian game in town. Despite this unfortunate turn of events, the little cafe across the street from the University of New Mexico still serves simple eats in an open air setting to students who come in for a quick, healthy meal.
