Improvements metrics

In simple relaxation (the fixed approximate Hessian method), the step does not depend on the iteration history. More sophisticated optimization teclmiques use infonnation gathered during previous steps to improve the estimate of the minunizer, usually by invoking a quadratic model of the energy surface. These methods can be divided into two classes variable metric methods and interpolation methods. 

The importance of a coal deposit depends on the amount that is economically recoverable by conventional mining techniques. The world total recoverable reserves of lignitic coals were 3.28 x 10 metric tons at the end of 1990 (3), of which ca 47% was economically recoverable as of 1994 (Table 4). These estimates of reserves change as geological survey data improve and as the resources are developed.

Mill Tailings. Recovery efficiency in ore processing is not 100%. Accumulated mill tailings contain tens of thousands of metric tons of uranium. Whereas improved techniques have been employed to recover some of this uranium, the recovery rate is still generally low, approximately 35—50%, owing to metallurgical problems and economic considerations (33). 

SoHd carbon dioxide is produced ia blocks by hydrauHc presses. Standard presses produce blocks 25 x 25 x 25 cm, 50 x 25 x 25 cm, or 50 X 50 X 25 cm. A 25-cm cube of dry ice weighs 23 kg, allowiag for about 10% sublimatioa loss duriag storage and shipment (some 27-kg blocks are also produced). Dry ice is about 1.7 times as dense as water ice, whereas its net refrigerating effect on a weight basis is twice that of water ice. Automation and improved operating cycles have iacreased dry-ice press capacities so that one 50 x 50 x 30 cm press can produce more than thirty metric tons of dry-ice blocks per day (42). 

Celanese recently announced an expansion that will double its tow and flake capacity from 35,750 metric tons to 60,500 metric tons by 1994 (106). The increased capacity will be achieved through expansions and productivity improvements at the U.S., Belgium, Canada, Mexico, and China operation centers. 

Color Difference Assessment. Color difference scales include those of Judd-Hunter, Macadam, Adams-Nickerson, ANLAB, and ANLAB40. AH of these have limitations in some way or another they are described in most texts (1 4). Each appHes only to the precise conditions used in thek determination and interconversion is not possible. Modifications of CIELAB in the metric form such as the CMC(1 c) system (14) promise improved performance for the future.
