Methyl Vanillin,

In contrast to vanillin from lignin, the principal impurity found in vanillin from guaiacol is 5-methyl vanillin, typically present at levels of about 100 ppm in Rhovanil Extra Pure (Rhc ne-Poulenc), although levels as high as 3000 ppm have been found in samples from other producers. This impurity is completely odorless. [Pg.397]

Methyl vanillin is used in flavorings, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes. It is closely related to ethyl vanillin, a slightly larger molecule. [Pg.68]

It is closely related to the slightly smaller molecule methyl vanillin. [Pg.69]

Preparation from Waste Sulfite Liquors. The starting material for vanillin production can also be the lignin present in sulfite wastes from the cellulose industry. The concentrated mother liquors are treated with alkali at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of oxidants. The vanillin formed is separated from the by-products, particularly ace-tovanillone. 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyacetophenone, by extraction, distillation, and crystallization. In contrast to vanillin from lignin, the principal impurity found in vanillin from guaiacol is 5-methyl vanillin, typically present at levels of about 100 ppm, although levels as high as 3000 ppm have been found. This impurity is completely odorless. [Pg.1668]

FEMA No. 3109 Methyl Vanillin Veratryl Aldehyde 3,4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde... [Pg.628]

The veratric aldehyde obtained by methylating vanillin (p. 102) may be used without further purification. [Pg.68]

The Remier-Tiemann reaction is also used to produce another form of vanillin called ethyl vanillin. Ethyl vanillin is the ethyl ether of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzaldehyde ((CH3CH20)(0H)C6H3CH0). It is a close chemical relative of natural vanillin in which the methyl ( CH3) group of natural vanillin is replaced by an ethyl ( CH2CH3) group. Ethyl vanillin is also known as artificial vanilla or synthetic vanilla. Its flavor is about three times as strong as that of methyl vanillin and is used to fortify or replace natural vanillin and lignin vanillin. [Pg.875]

Among the aldehydes isolated from the oil methyl-vanillin was found, which had never previously been found in an essential oil. Citral, Z-a-pinene, and methyl-isoeugenol are also present in the oil. [Pg.87]
