Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether plants

The process gas of ethylene plants and methyl tertiary butyl ether plants is normally a hydrogen/ methane mixture. The molecular weight of the gas in such processes ranges from 3.5 to 14. The tliermodynamic behavior of hydrogen/methane mixtures has been and continues to be extensively researched. The gas dynamic design of turboexpanders, which are extensively used in such plants, depends on the equations of state of the process gas. Optimum performance of the turboexpander and associated equipment demands accurate thermodynamic properties for a wide range of process gas conditions. 

Isobutylene is the most chemically reactive of the butylene isopiers. If the objective is just to get the isobutylene out of the C4 stream, it can be removed by reaction with methanol (CH3OH) to make MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), by reaction with water to make TBA (tertiary butyl alcohol), by polymerization, or by solvent extraction. After that, butene-1 can be removed by selective adsorption or by distillation. That leaves the butene-2 components, together with iso- and normal butane, which are generally used as feed to an alkylation plant.

The refinery s existing water treatment plant was very effective in removing waterborne contaminants, with overall removal efficiencies greater than 99% for most organics and inorganics. Except for methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), most contaminants were not detectable in the treated effluent discharged into the York River. 

Feed Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) can be used as feedstock in the plant. In the case of high level of impurities, a purification section can be added before the reactor.
