The aldol reaction of 2,2-dimethyl-3-pentanone, which is mediated by chiral lithium amide bases, is another route for the formation of nonracemic aldols. Indeed, (lS,2S)-l-hydroxy-2,4,4-trimethyl-l-phenyl-3-pentanone (21) is obtained in 68% ee, if the chiral lithiated amide (/ )-A-isopropyl-n-lithio-2-methoxy-l-phenylethanamine is used in order to chelate the (Z)-lithium cnolate, and which thus promotes the addition to benzaldehyde in an enantioselective manner. No anti-adduct is formed25.

It has been observed, however, that methylene groups are not as easily substituted as might be expected. As for the potent odorants in green tea (sen-cha) drinks, the eleven components shown in hgure 17.7 are found to be important contributors to its characteristics. Using the AEDA method, the characteristic sulfur components, such as 4-methoxy-2-methyl-2-butanethiol, 4-mercapto-4-methyl-2-pentanone, and methional, were identihed from the green tea for the first time. Among these eleven components, P-damascenone and methional were reported to increase after the heating process (hgure 17.4), then theorized to have a remarkable effect on the tea drink quality.

NaH added to a stirred mixture of 2-(2-methoxy-4-methyl-5-bromophenyl)cyclo-pentanone in 1,2-dimethoxyethane, warmed 2 hrs. at 70 under Ng, methyl iodide added dropwise, stirred 1 hr. at 70 , then refluxed 1 hr. -> 2-methyl-2-(2-methoxy-4-methyl-5-bromophenyl)cyclopentanone.
