So far we have chiefly considered graphical and semi-graphical methods, as the -are best suited for clarifying the idea of a separating stage. Numerous procedures have, however, also been developed for determining the conditions during distillation arithmetically. 

The graphical methods have the advantage of being based on the equilibrium curve of the mixture, so that they are applicable to non-ideal systems. The methods based purely on calculation as a rule postulate an ideal system.
