Desoxyn - Methamphetamine

Methamphetamine (Desoxyn). Methamphetamine is a relatively long-acting stimulant. Lasting up to 12 hours, it can often be taken only once a day and is just as effective at treating ADHD as other stimulants. However, methamphetamine is seldom used today. For one thing, it is much more expensive than other stimulants. For another, this variant of amphetamine is the form often produced in illicit speed labs for street use. Many families and physicians are understandably reluctant to use a medication with this reputation for abuse.

Methamphetamine (desoxyn) acts centrally to release DA and other biogenic amines and to inhibit neuronal and vesicular monoamine transporters and MAO. Small doses have prominent central stimulant effects without significant peripheral actions somewhat larger doses produce a sustained rise in systolic and diastolic blood pressures, due mainly to cardiac stimulation and an increase in cardiac output secondary to venoconsfriction. Methamphetamine is a schedule II drug and is widely abused (see Chapter 23). 

Methamphetamine, a Schedule 11 drug, was first synthesized in 1919. It can be synthesized from ephedrine or pseudo-ephedrine. Methamphetamine is available by prescription for weight control, ADHD, and narcolepsy under the brand name Desoxyn . Street names for methamphetamine include chalk, crank, crystal, fire, glass, ice, rocks, shabu, speed, and yaba. Methamphetamine is often found at rave sites, where people exert themselves while dancing and deprive themselves of sleep, food, and drink, which can result in increased body temperature with excessive sweating and possibly a salt imbalance. 

Methamphetamines are still legally produced in the United States for attention-deficit disorder (ADD) under the trade names Desoxyn or Ritalin (methylphenidate). As the street name speed suggests, amphetamines elevate mood, heighten endurance, and eliminate fatigue. 

Also on the market were anorectic diet pills including benzphetamine, diethylpropion, mazindol, and phendimetrazine. Another anorectic, methamphetamine, was sold under the trade name Desoxyn. It was also prescribed for the treatment of ADHD. 

Even when speed began to get a bad reputation in the late l960s I didn t know I was on it. I was really shocked to learn that Desoxyn was lust a brand name for methamphetamine and even more shocked to find that I couldn t stop taking it. If I tried to cut down the dose or stop, I would be groggy, depressed, and unable to concentrate or do my school work. I would also eat a lot and gam weight. By the way, I also drank a lot of coffee and smoked cigarettes, so I was really a heavy user of stimulants. 

Legal methamphetamine is sold under such trade names as Desoxyn, Methedrine, etc. It is closely related both in structure and effects to regular amphetamine, called benzedrine and dexedrine.
