Methadone treatment models

A comparison between the medical model of methadone treatment and a model of methadone as a so-called heroin substitute is outlined in Table 1.2, and these concepts will now be considered.

Although there have not been examinations of the link between such a philosophy and the policies and treatment practices adopted, it is likely that an approach which is driven by the patient s preferences and seeks to avoid any disagreement or confrontation will be associated with practices which could be popular, but also less secure than advised. Certainly the extent of the departure from the original model of methadone maintenance... 

Those in this condition were prescribed methadone on a fixed reduction schedule (5 mg reduction every two weeks). Therapy consisted of brief intensive sessions with initial emphasis on engaging the family in the treatment programme. The theoretical approach of our therapy derived from both a structural and strategic model, described earlier.
