The silica is well bonded to the matrix using 0.3 wt% (on filler) of a silane coupling agent (y-methacryloxypropyl (trimethoxy) silane) for both sets of composites. [Pg.453]

To initiate polymerization from the particles, double bonds (ie. reactive groups) had to be firstly attached to the surfaces of Si02 nauoparticles through the pre-treatment of silane (7-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane) [14,15]. Then, the silane pre-treated nanoparticles were mixed with toluene under sonication. Afterwards the initiator, isobutyronitrile (AIBN), was added with stirring into the reactor that had been kept at a certain temperature and protected with N2. The monomers were incorporated into the system a few minutes later. The reaction went on for several hours, and then the graft product could be received from the filtration of the resultant suspension. Eventually, the grafted nauo-Si02 was mixed with PP powder and extruded. [Pg.119]

A copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and y-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (y-MPS) was used to prepare a series of hybrid anion exchange membranes. The epoxy groups of the methacrylate contained in the copolymers were converted to quaternary ammonium groups through reaction with trimethylamine. The trimethoxysilyl... [Pg.301]

Compared to the bulky VTIPS and MTIPS, the analogous trimethoxy-substituted silanes would be expected to hydrolyze to a much greater extent under the same reaction conditions. This is borne out by experiment the following table shows the percent of alkoxy groups that hydrolyze during the synthesis of silylated latexes containing 0.25 mol percent methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS) and vinyl trimethoxysilane (VTMS), respectively. [Pg.748]
