Metathesis with metal sulfates

Alternatively potassium sulfate is manufactured by metathesis of potassium chloride with the sulfate of another metal, particularly magnesium sulfate. This reaction takes place in two steps ... 

The reactive intermediates used in chain-growth polymerizations include radicals, carbanions, carbocations, and organometallic complexes. Of the three common metal catalyzed polymerizations - coordination-insertion, ring-opening metathesis and diene polymerization - the last appears to possess the greatest tolerance toward protic solvents. The polymerization of butadiene in polar solvents was first reported in 1961 using Rh salts [18]. It was discovered that these polymerizations could be performed in aqueous solution with an added emulsifier (sodium dodecyl sulfate, for example). 

Chemistry may have found an answer. Sandia National Labs in the United States have developed a cheap mixture of ammonium nitrate and iron sulfate which is a cheap and effective fertilizer, but which, crucially, when mixed with fuel oil does not become an ANFO explosive. As soon as the mixture is mixed with a solvent, such as fuel oil, a metathesis reaction occurs and the two metal ions...
