Metallurgy Cast iron should not be used for flammable or hazardous service. The minimum metallurgy for centrifugal pumps for hazardous or flammable materials is cast ductile iron, type ASTM A 395, having an ultimate tensile strength of about 60,000 psi. [Pg.129]

The metallurgy selected for construction of a firewater pump is dependent on the properties of the water source to be used. For fresh water sources (i.e., public water mains), cast iron is normally adequate although bronze internals may be optional. The powder-forming processes are similar in many ways to those nsed for powder metallurgy described in the previons section.
