Transition metal oxides or their combinations with metal oxides from the lower row 5 a elements were found to be effective catalysts for the oxidation of propene to acrolein. Examples of commercially used catalysts are supported CuO (used in the Shell process) and Bi203/Mo03 (used in the Sohio process). In both processes, the reaction is carried out at temperature and pressure ranges of 300-360°C and 1-2 atmospheres. In the Sohio process, a mixture of propylene, air, and steam is introduced to the reactor. The hot effluent is quenched to cool the product mixture and to remove the gases. Acrylic acid, a by-product from the oxidation reaction, is separated in a stripping tower where the acrolein-acetaldehyde mixture enters as an overhead stream. Acrolein is then separated from acetaldehyde in a solvent extraction tower. Finally, acrolein is distilled and the solvent recycled. [Pg.215]

As an example for the specific case of vanadium alloys with palladium, the trend of the average atomic volume of the alloys is shown in Fig. 4.20 and compared with the phase diagram. These data were obtained by Ellner (2004) who studied the solid solutions of several metals (Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni) in palladium. The alloys were heat treated at 800°C and water-quenched. From the unit cell parameters measured by X-ray diffraction methods, the average atomic volume was obtained Vat = c 14 (see Table 4.3). Extensive theoretical investigations devoted to calculation of residual stresses have been carried out for metals. The principal theme of this work is assumption that residual stresses and strains are the result of differences between pure elastic and elastic-plastic deformations under fixed loading.127 128 The same mechanism, i.e., the appearance of plastic deformed zones, is responsible for the residual stresses arising during crystallization of metals, which occurs on quenching from the melt or cooling after welding. [Pg.83]

Stable phases in the rare earth oxide systems are tabulated and discussed. New data on the structure of sesquioxides quenched from the melt are reported. The structural interrelations between the A, B, and C type sesquioxides and the fiuorite dioxides are pointed out. The sequences of several intermediate oxides in the CeO, PrO., and TbO, systems are observed to be related to the fluorite structure and the C form sesquioxide with respect to the metal atom positions. A hypothetical homologous series of the general formula Mn02n i, related to the fluorite structure and the A form sesquioxide with a more or less fixed oxygen lattice, is suggested. [Pg.50]
