Horiuchi et al. have developed a simple diy process for s mthesis a of metal nanoparticles in polymer films through the reduction of a metal complex used as a precursor [228, 229]. In this process, a precursor (e.g. Pd(acac)2) is vaporized, and then exposed to a polymer film. The vapor can penetrate into a polymer film and is simultaneously reduced to form Pd metallic particles with diameters ranging from 2 to 10 nm with narrow size distributions. Cobalt nanoparticles were also reported to be synthesized using the corresponding metal complex by the same procedure [230]. For the production of metal nanoparticles in this process, no a low molecular weight reducing agent (catalyst) is required for the reduction of the metal complex, which means that polymer films themselves have the catalytic activity to reduce the metal salt or metal complex. [Pg.175]

The formation of noble metal nanoparticle (Ag, Au, Pt)-embedded PDMS composites have been reported by a simple one-step method [46]. These nano composites exhibit the combined properties of metal and polymers, e.g., elasticity, strength, antibacterials effectiveness, etc. In addition, the properties of the nano composites can be tailored by varing the size, shape, distribution and relative concentration of metal nanoparticles in polymer matrix [52]. [Pg.87]
