Metal matrix composites advantages

Meial Mairix Composites. Silicon carbide particles are contributing to easy-to-cast metal-matrix composites (MMCs). When compared with their non-reinforced counterparts, the SiCp/Al components are more wear resistant, stiffer, and stronger, accompanied by improved thermal stability. Additional advantages include lower density and lower cost. Nearly all prior aluminum MMCs required labor-intensive methods, such as powder metallurgy, diffusion bonding, squeeze casting, or thermal spraying. [Pg.70]

Description and General Properties. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) consist of a metal or an alloy matrix with a reinforcement material (e.g., particulates, monofilaments, or whiskers). The matrix alloy, the reinforcement material, the volume and shape of the reinforcement, the location of the reinforcement, and the fabrication method can all be varied to achieve required properties. Most of the metal-matrix composites are made of an aluminum matrix. But aluminum-matrix composites must not be considered as a single material but as a family of materials whose stiffness, strength, density, and thermal and electrical properties can be tailored. Moreover a growing number of applications require improved matrix properties and therefore, metal matrices of magnesium, titanium, superalloys, copper, or even iron are now available commercially. Compared to bulk metals and their alloys, MMCs offer a number of advantages such as ... [Pg.1031]

The next generation of fibre-reinforced materials were the metal matrix composites (MMC) of ductile alloys reinforced with hard carbon or ceramic fibres and whiskers. The MMC offer serious advantages over other types of composites, mainly in the following aspects ... [Pg.21]

The requirement for a strip rollable alloy suitable for high-temperature use in metal matrix composites (MMC s) led to the development of TIMETAL-21S (Beta 2IS). The alloy has creep resistance equivalent to Ti-6A1-4V combined with the advantages of a strip rollable, cold formable p alloy. It is finding many uses where its corrosion and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatiire are more important than the ability to withstand high stresses at elevated temperature. Applications up to 600 °C are anticipated. The alloy s oxidation resistance and mod-... [Pg.50]

The metal-ceramic composite appears to have a number of advantages it improves the mechanical properties of the material, allowing it to retain more of its superconductivity while making it more plastic the silver matrix protects the composite from the degrading processes that result from exposure of the material to moist air the metallic silver allows the material to cool quicker and more efficiently than the composite alone. [Pg.67]

As structural materials for high-temperature components in advanced engines forpower and propulsion, fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC) offer a variety ofperfor-mance advantages overthe best metallic alloys with current stractural capability to 1100°C. [Pg.77]
