The mechanism and rate of hydrogen peroxide decomposition depend on many factors, including temperature, pH, presence or absence of a catalyst (7—10), such as metal ions, oxides, and hydroxides etc. Some common metal ions that actively support homogeneous catalysis of the decomposition include ferrous, ferric, cuprous, cupric, chromate, dichromate, molybdate, tungstate, and vanadate. A chain mechanism is proposed for this reaction. The first step is oxidation of a carboxylate ion coordinated to Pb(IV), with formation of alkyl radical, carbon dioxide, and Pb(III). The alkyl radical then abstracts halogen from a Pb(IV) complex, generating a Pb(IIl) species that decomposes to Pb(II) and an alkyl radical. This alkyl radical can continue the chain process. The step involving abstraction of halide from a complex with a change in metal-ion oxidation state is a ligand-transfer type reaction. [Pg.726]

There are many transition metal ion oxidants used in organic chemistry for the interconversion of functional groups. Those which have been used for the preparation of sulphones from sulphoxides will be discussed below. It is very interesting to note that this type of oxidant often reacts more rapidly with sulphoxides than with sulphides and so sulphoxides may be selectively oxidized with transition metal ion oxidants in the presence of sulphides. This is in direct contrast to the oxidation of sulphides and sulphoxides with peracids and periodate, for example, where the rate of reaction of the sulphide is more than 100 times that for the corresponding sulphoxide. [Pg.982]
