Metabolic regulation principles

Having now considered the principles of metabolic regulation, we can turn our attention to some real pathways and study how the theory is put into practice. Further details of the control reactions of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis are given in Section 6.4.2. 

Glycolysis is the major route of carbohydrate metabolism in all cell types and the TCA is a focal point allowing the integration of carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism. The two pathways are illustrated in Figures 3.9 and 3.14. These two well-known pathways exemplify many of the general principles of metabolic regulation described above. 

A principle in metabolic regulation that allows one to identify the inhibited step within a metabolic pathway as that reaction for which the concentrations of reactants and products rise and fall, respectively, from their steady-state values when an inhibitor is introduced. In the context of the electron transfer chain, the crossover-point refers to that reaction step demarking the transition from more reduced to more oxidized respiratory enzymes.

In selecting carbohydrate metabolism to illustrate the principles of metabolic regulation, we have artificially separated the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. In fact, these two activities are very tightly integrated, as we shall see in Chapter 23.
