Since the 1990s, mesoporous materials have attracted a great deal of attention based on their apphcations in the fields of molecular sorption, ahgnment, confinement, and the formation of nanoclusters. Unlike microporous zeohtes, these materials are usuaUy prepared via template methods, and have ordered hexagonal or cubic charmels with pore diameters ranging from 2 to 10 nm. The internal surface of the mesoporous materials can be modified by covalently anchoring a number of functional groups to their channel walls. Thus, mesoporous materials are also attractive in view not only of controlled polymerization but also the formation of polymer nanocomposites [10]. [Pg.1014]

We measured the electrical conductivity of Pt-C nanocomposites using two-point measurements. In a representative example the NP-polymer hybrid had a conductivity of 2.5 mS cm-1, which increased to 400 S cm-1 upon pyrolysis. Despite the presence of carbon, to the best of our knowledge this value represented the highest electrical conductivity yet measured for ordered mesoporous materials derived from block copolymers. This discovery creates a potential pathway to a new class of ordered mesoporous metals made from nanoparticles of different elements and/or distinct compositions. Very little data exists on the fracture toughness of porous silicon. However two studies suggest that optimized nanocomposites (see hand book chapter Polymer-Porous Silicon Composites ) could exhibit much higher toughness than nonporous silicon.
