Merging decisions

The growing ethnie nationalism of the Toba Batak, in other words, was emphatically not shared by the Mandailing of this period, who made religion the decisive criterion of identification , as Castles puts it, and unlike the Muslims of Angkola and Sipirok, let Islam rob them of their ancestors (Castles 1972 280). Besides religion, the emotive power of anti-imperial nationalism also played a role in defining Batak identity, less in competition with ethnie nationalism than in a layered merging with it. 

A practical way to calculate completeness is on an individual method basis. Individual method completeness is the number of valid measurements as a percentage of the total number of measurements in one analytical method. A single parameter analysis may be invalid for all samples, but it will not have much effect on the completeness calculation if merged with a large total analyte number. This one method may, however, be of critical importance for the project decisions. Calculating method analytical completeness enables us to determine whether any of the performed analytical methods fail to provide a sufficient quantity of valid data and, consequently, whether resampling and reanalysis may be needed. 

The second class of algorithms merge all heat sources or sinks operating at the same temperature level. Thus if parts of two or more hot streams have heat available over the same temperature range, those parts are merged and treated as one larger heat source in that temperature interval. Deals at the business unit level have another advantage, too they reduce the potential for conflict over corporate control, a point especially relevant for small or medium-sized companies that fear losing decision-making power by merging with larger conglomerates. A deal with a rival closer to their own size may reduce this concern. 

There has been quite a bit of work on automatically creating mediated schemas that focused on the theoretical analysis of the semantics of merging schemas and the choices that need to be made in the process (Batini et al. 1986 Buneman et al. 1992 Hull 1984 Kalinichenko 1990 Miller et al. 1993 Pottinger and Bernstein 2002). The goal of these works was to make as many decisions automatically as possible, but where some ambiguity arises, refer to input from a designer.

The results of CTA are usually cast in the form of graphical representations that incorporate the work demands and user strategies. For cognitive tasks that have been encountered in the past, operators may have developed well-established responses that may need some modifications but nevertheless provide a starting framework. For unfamiliar tasks that have not been encountered in the past or are beyond the design-basis of the system, operators are required to develop new methods or combine old methods in new ways. To illustrate how the results of CTA can be merged in a graphical form, two techniques are presented hierarchical task analysis and the critical decision method.
