The properties of alloys are affected by their composition and structure. Not only is the crystalline structure important, but the size and texture of the individual grains also contribute to the properties of an alloy. Some metal alloys are one-phase homogeneous solutions. Examples are brass, bronze, and the gold coinage alloys. Other alloys are heterogeneous mixtures of different crystalline phases, such as tin-lead solder and the mercury-silver amalgams used to fill teeth. [Pg.811]

Yamamoto et al. [60] determined picogram quantities of methyl mercury and total mercury in seawater by gold amalgamation and atomic absorption spectrometry. Methyl mercury was extracted with benzene and concentrated by a succession of three partitions between benzene and cysteine solution. Total mercury was extracted by wet combustion of the sample with sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate. The proportion of methyl mercury to total mercury in the coastal seawater sampled was around 1%. [Pg.464]

Elemental mercury is used industrially in electric lamps and switches, gauges and controls (e.g. thermometers, barometers, thermostats), battery production, nuclear weapons production, and the specialty chemical industry, including the production of caustic soda. Because elemental mercury has a high affinity for gold and silver, it has been, and continues to be, used in precious metal extraction from ore. Elemental mercury has been used for over one hundred years in mercury-silver amalgam preparations to repair dental caries. Mercury continues to be used in folk remedies and in certain cultural practices, with unknown public health implications. [Pg.101]

A series of mercury mass balances was obtained at a coal-fired power plant by comparing the volatile and particulate mercury in the stack gas stream to the mercury initially in the coal, corrected for the mercury adsorbed and retained by the various ashes. These data were used to determine the fate of the mercury in the combustion process and to check the accuracy of the volatile mercury sampling procedure (gold amalgamation). The bottom ash had the lowest mercury concentration of the ash samples collected, and the mercury concentration increased as one proceeded through the ash collection system from the initial mechanical ash to the electrostatic ash. The mercury recovered in the various ashes represented about 10% of the total mercury introduced in the raw coal. [Pg.162]
