Mercury amide imide

The cathodic reduction of aromatic carboxamides and imides in acid solution at lead or mercury cathodes generally leads to amines and isoindolines, respectively 7,9 These reactions are of great preparative interest but their mechanism have not been examined. Cpe of isonicotinic amide and 2-thiazolecarboxaldehyde in acid solution gives the corresponding aldehydes in good yields 139>141)... 

Similarly, mercury-nitrogen compounds may resemble either salts or acid-base type adducts. Saltlike compounds of this type include the familiar white amino compound, Cl—Hg—NH2, and analogous compounds formed from organic amines, for example, Cl—Hg—NHCH3 organic amides and imides also are known to form mercury derivatives, descriptions of which appear in more comprehensive works. 

The carbonyl group of amides, lactams, and imides is reducible at lead and mercury cathodes in strongly acidic media, usually to the corresponding methylene compound. In media of lesser acidity cathodic cleavage may occur, and depending on the structure of the starting material and the detailed reaction conditions, the products outlined in Eq. (32) are accessible by cathodic reduction.
