MERCAPTOBENZOTHIAZYL

Barnes et al developed an LC-MS method to identify vulcanisation agents and their breakdown products in food and drink samples. A large sample of 236 retail foodstuffs were analysed for the presence of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and its breakdown product mercapto-benzothiazole (MB). The accelerators 2-mercaptobenzothiazyl (MBTS) and A-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide (CBS), which are commonly used in food contact rubbers, were also looked for. MBT and MB are also known to be breakdown products of these two compounds. The detection limit for these species was found to depend on the food product type and ranged from 0.005-0.043 mg/kg. No MBT, MB, MBTS or CBS were detected in any of the samples above these levels. 

In 1933, the Calco Chemical Company began the manufacture of 97 by reacting aniline, carbon disulfide and sulfur together at elevated pressure (Scheme 31), and late in 1936 introduced mercaptobenzothiazyl disulfide (MBTS) (98). Goodyear was the major customer. Zenite ultra-accelerators , incorporating zinc (99), that brought about vulcanization in a few minutes, were introduced by Calco in the late 1930s100. 

In silica reinforcement systems containing TESPT, Wolff has suggested that the reaction is similar when the TESPT/silica intermediate is present instead of sulfur, in which case the crosslinking agent is the polysulfidic sulfur chain. Wolff showed that mercaptobenzothiazyl disulfide (MBTS) reacts with the tetrasulfane group, thus forming 2 mol of the polysulfide ...

Investigations were carried out with the binary combinations of each of bis(N-methylpiperazino)thiuram disulphide, tetrabenzylthiuram disulphide, and tetramethylthiuram disulphide, separately with N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and 2-mercaptobenzothiazyl disulphide in the combinations studied. 19 refs.
