Variation in hormonal levels (especially in estrogens) during the menstrual cycle determines the alteration of epithelial cell thickness, causing the widening of the intercellular channels and consequently variation in pH, composition, and secretion amount. Moreover, hormonal changes influence enzymatic activity of endopeptidases and aminopeptidases, causing further complications for drug delivery and therapeutic schedule [2,3,5,6,10],... 

An important aspect of the epithelium is an elaborate system of channels between the cells. These intercellular channels are capable of changing width as the hormone levels change during the menstrual cycle. The channels can accommodate rapid movement of leukocytes and large proteins such as IgG and albumin they are an important pathway of watery secretion from the blood network to the tissue. 

To date, no garlic supplementation trial has been conducted exclusively using women as subjects. Hormonal changes during a woman s menstrual cycle have been shown to elevate cholesterol levels 7-14 days after the start of menstruation. Therefore, fasting blood samples must be taken 3 to 7 days after the start of menstruation in order to ensure accurate blood lipid readings. Previous studies that included women as subjects made no mention of controlling for menstrual variation. 

Human leukocytes possess alkaline phosphatase (L13, 03, RIO, T6, V3, V4) whose activity parallels the concentration of certain circulating steroids. Thus, during the menstrual cycle, the leukocyte alkaline phosphatase evidences a peak at midcycle corresponding to the higher estrogen level. In the later stages of pregnancy the enzyme level increases. Corti-coid hormones also exert an effect on leukocyte alkaline phosphatase. 

Abnormalities in calcium or parathyroid hormone homeostasis may be a factor in depression. Significant fluctuations in calcitonin, a calcium-regulating hormone, and low plasma calcium levels during the menstrual cycle may play a part in the etiology of PMS. Calcium influx into brain cells is involved with the release of many neurotransmitters. Calcium supplementation (e.g., 1200-1600 mg/day of calcium carbonate in two divided doses) has been shown to reduce premenstrual symptoms such as anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings, headache, fluid retention, and cramps. " " Calcium supplementation may help to prevent osteoporosis later in life, and it is a relatively safe and inexpensive treatment. ...
