Mendeleev, Dmitrii Ivanovich system

On February 17, 1869 (according to the old Julian calendar), the Russian chemist Dmitrii Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834 1907, Figure 3) wrote a pamphlet entitled "An Attempted System of the Elements Based on... 

This homologous placement of the rare-earth elements shows to what extend Mendeleev s viewpoints had changed by the end of the first half of 1870. What catches the eye is that Dmitrii Ivanovich had switched from placing the rare-earth elements as a group in the periodic system to an individual placement of each element separately (Fig. 11.6). That is, by breaking up the natural group of rare earths, Mendeleev ended up with a set of distinct elements which he set out to accommodate on an individual basis in dijferent groups of the system. 

In 1869 Dmitrii Ivanovich Mendeleev and several months later Julius Lothar Meyer published independent versions of a periodic system of the elements. Credit for the "periodic law is given to these two scientists (especially Mendeleev) not because they were the first to describe periodic classifications of the elements, but more particularly for the following reasons ... 

Russian chemist Dmitrii Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907) is most widely-known for his 1869 formulation of the periodic system of chemical elements. In addition to this achievement, he also explored a variety of topics in physics and chemistry over the course of a very active scientific and political career. Distinctive about Mendeleev s work was his close (although not systematic) attention to various philosophical topics relating to his chemical work.
