Melt generation

A horizontal column is typified by the Brodie Purifier, which is shown schematically in Figure 26. Feed enters the column between recovery and refining sections, and crystals exit the refining section and pass through a purifying section. The purifying section is a wash column in which the crystals are contacted with melt generated at the bottom of the column.

Example. Compare the concentrations of a highly incompatible trace element with = 0.02 in the extracted melt produced by batch melting and the extracted melt generated by fractional melting. 

Injection molding involves two distinct processes. The first is melt generation, mixing, and pressurization and flow, which is carried out in the injection unit of the molding machine. The second is product shaping, which takes place in the mold cavity. Injection molders, therefore, have two distinct parts the injection unit and the mold/clamping unit. The function of the injection unit is to melt the polymer and inject it into the mold the function of the clamping unit is to hold the mold, open and close the mold, and eject the finished product. 

Although present in small amounts, mafic rocks (here defined as those with MgO > 4 wt % ) are particularly interesting since they represent the closest relatives of primary melts generated in the upper mantle. 

The polymeric melt generated by the melting step must be conveyed and pressurized or pumped by the processing machine to force it through dies, or into molds, to assume useful shapes. This is the subject matter of this chapter.
