Mediator-less MFC

Metals other than Pt. Cathodes made of several different metals have been examined for use in various types of fuel cells, although not all of them can be considered to be MFCs. For example, the system used by Shantaram et al. (2005) was briefly described in Chapter 3. This is not a true MFC as the system used a sacrificial metal anode (Mg). In other tests they used glucose and a culture of Klebsiella pneumoniae and a mediator 12-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, HNQ) in the anode chamber, which also means that they did not test a true mediator-less MFC Rhoads et al. 2005).
