Long term tradition, as well as scientific knowledge, shows that consumption of fermented milk products is beneficial for human health. For instance, longevity in some Mediterranean areas is attributed to an increased consumption of sheep cheese and fermented milk. More than 100 years ago Russian biologist Ilya Mechnikov already mentioned health effects of fermented milk. [Pg.114]

Paul Ehrlich, 1854-1915, was bom in Silesia (Strehlen), now Strzelin, Poland, into a Jewish family. He studied medicine at the University of Leipzig. Later on he did research at the famous Charite Hospital in Berlin and also at the Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases in Berlin. Ehrlich shared the 1908 Nobel Prize for medicine with the Russian biologist Ilya Iljich Mechnikov (1845-1916). The greatest distinctions bestowed by the Prussian state were the title Wirklicher Geheimer Rat (Privy Councillor with the predicate of Exzellenz ) and an honorary citizenship by Frankfurt am Main, where the institute he founded still bears his name. [Pg.281]
