As an organic polymer, poly(tetramethylene oxide) was also used for the preparation of ceramers. The mechanical properties in these cases were much improved in comparison with those for hybrids from polysiloxanes. In these poly (tetramethylene oxide)-silica hybrids, the effect of the number of functional triethoxysilyl groups was examined [13]. As shown in Fig. 2, more multifunctional organic polymer produced more crosslinked hybrid networks. This means that the more rigid the structure in the hybrids is, the higher the modulus and the lower swelling property. [Pg.15]

A torsional pendulum (Figure 5.80) is often used to determine dynamic properties. The lower end of the specimen is clamped rigidly and the upper clamp is attached to the inertia arm. Improvement of the mechanical properties of elastomers is usually reached by their reinforcement with fillers. The mechanical properties of various types of carbon nanotubes have been extensively studied by both theoretical and experimental studies. In 1993, Overney et al. firstly calculated the rigidity of short SWNTs and the calculated Young s modulus was estimated to be about 1500 GPa, similar to that of graphite (65). Then a range of studies predicted that the Young s modulus of carbon nanotubes was approximately 1 TPa (66).
