MDBK cells

The following cell cultures and virus have shown to be suitable MDBK cells (ATCC No. CCL22), or Mouse L cells (NCTC clone 929 ATCC No. CCL I) as the cell culture and vesicular stomatitis virus VSV Indiana strain (ATCC No. VR-158) as the infective agent or human diploid fibroblast FS-71 cells responsive to interferon as the cell culture, and encephalomyocarditis virus (ATCC No. VR-129B) as the infective agent. [Pg.526]

As indicated above, these data do not tell us whether a function" is lacking in MDBK which is essential for viral protein or RNA synthesis, or whether a macromolecule is synthesized which prevents the translation of viral proteins or viral RNA synthesis. Since MDBK can be infected productively by other viruses (Bovine enterovirus, influenza), it must be a molecule specific for the mengo-MDBK cell interaction. The greatest enigma in our data is the origin of the early ENA replicase, since very little (or no) protein synthesis occurs. [Pg.344]

In order to determine whether restriction is due to a lack of host factor as opposed to inhibition by a host factor of viral functions, it was decided to hybridize MDBK with L-cells. We have introduced an HGPRT mutation into the MDBK cells, and utilized a TK strain of L-cells. Hybrids were selected in HAT medium (hypoxanthine, aminopterin, thymidine), clones were selected, grown up, and tested for virus yield. Table 2 summarizes the data obtained. [Pg.344]
