McAdams, William

Thanks to the leadership of Lewis and his colleagues, the chemical engineering department became an intellectually powerful center during this period. Its preeminence was fostered by the publication of the pioneer text in 1923, Principles of Chemical Engineering, by Walker, Lewis, and William H. McAdams. At the same time, Lewis developed a new kind of relation with industry, one that proved to have enormous impact on the chemical process industries and on teaching and research in academia. In fact, petroleum refining was the industry that provided the key to many future developments in chemical engineering. [Pg.45]

A. H. White In the spring of 1919 when Colonel William H. Walker and I were still in Army uniform, he told me that he was going to his Maine cottage in June with W. K. Lewis and W. H. McAdams and write a text book on chemical engineering (9),... [Pg.8]

This, then, was the man who developed the program in chemical engineering so boldly outlined by Little and Walker. He surrounded himself from the beginning with men of promise in their respective fields. These included William McAdams, Clark Robinson, Robert Haslam, Walter Whitman, Harold Weber, and William Ryan, who unfortunately died in 1933. Robinson died in the late 1940 s, Haslam in the early 1960 s and Whitman, Lewis, and McAdams in the early 1970 s. During the period from the mid-1920 s to World War II, Ernst Hauser, Hoyt Hottel, Thomas Sherwood, Edwin CilUland, Herman Meissner, Glenn Williams, and Edward Vivian would be added. These men formed the framework on which the present staff was built. [Pg.82]
