Another salamander courtship pheromone, identified in 1999, is a protein. Several years of research were spent developing formulations that would release pheromone at a satisfactory rate through the mating season (about 8 weeks). 

The females give birth to only one offspring each season, and they leave the water and have their babies either on land or ice. The length of mating season is determined by environmental conditions. When food is abundant and weather mild, breeding season can stretch up to eight months, but when conditions are unfavorable it may last no longer than three days.
