A new route for preparing methyl 4,6-di-O-methyl-oc-D-mannopyranoside via methyl 2,3-di-O-toluene-p-sulphonyl-a-D-mannopyranoside has been described. Mass-spectral fragmentation pathways proposed for 5-0-acetyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-methyl-, 2,5-di-0-acetyl-3,4,6-tri-0-methyl-, and 3,5-di-0-acetyl-2,4,6-tri-0-methyl-D-mannononitrile were also confirmed.
