While a few estimates of water budgets have been attempted for individual volcanoes and eruptions (e.g., 3Tgyr for White Island, New Zealand (Rose et al., 1986) 13 Tg yr for Masaya, Nicragua (Burton et al., 2000)), meaningful estimates of the global volcanic flux of water to the atmosphere are unavailable as of early 2000s. Interpretation of water emission rates from volcanoes is complicated by the likelihood, in many cases, that a substantial fraction of the emitted water has been derived from groundwaters (e.g., Taran et al., 1995).
