Radial/axial mixers pitched bladed and marine propeller... 

Impellers and paddle are larger slower-speed mixers with two or four blades. Both mixer types are almost universal for low and moderate viscosity. The flat-blade turbine has a predominant radial action being suited for turbulent mixing, as in the case of gas-liquid dispersions. The pitched-blade mixer and the marine propeller are appropriate for axial mixing. 

Liquid-Liquid Mixer Design Many different types of impellers are used for liquid-liquid extraction, including flat-blade and pitched-blade turbines, marine-type propellers, and special pump-mix impellers. With pump-mix designs, the impeller serves not only to mix the fluids, but also to move the fluids through the extraction stages of a mixer-settler cascade. The agitated vessel should be baffled if the vessel is operated with a gas-liquid surface, to avoid forming a vortex. As noted earlier in reference to Eq. (15-172), baffles are not needed if the vessel is operated with the liquid full [Weinstein and Treybal, AIChEJ., 19(2), pp. 304-312 (1973)]. 

Using a marine blade propeller and rapid agitation (800 rpm) provided by a Lightnin Mixer or similar variable speed unit, sprinkle the Carbopol ETD 2623 resin into the vortex. Allow to hydrate for 15-20 minutes or until no lumps are present. Warming the deionized water to 30C will decrease the hydration time and improve the dispersibility of the Carbopol powder.
