One of Perrin s students, the brilliant Rene Marcelin who perished in the First World War, set to work on the general problem, demonstrating that, in addition to the Arrhenius activation energy, the rate constant had to contain an activation entropy term. 76 In his thesis, defended in 1914, Marcelin developed a general theory of absolute reaction rates, describing activation-dependent phenomena by the movement of representative points in space. 

Eyring, who successfully incorporated a quantum mechanical treatment of particle interactions into a theory of absolute rates in the 1930s, later praised Marcelin s "neglected" work that had been accomplished well before physicists elaborated the second quantum theory.77...

This announcement was read to the Academy by Debray, for Moissan was not then a member, and the president appointed a committee consisting of MM. J.-H. Debray, Marcelin Berthelot, and Edmond Fremy to investigate the discovery. In the presence of these distinguished guests, the apparatus acted like a spoiled child. Picrre-Eugene-Marcelin Berthelot, 1827—1907. French chemist and historian of chemistry. His researches were in the diverse fields of organic synthesis, chemical statics and dynamics, thermochemistry, explosives, nitrifying bacteria in the soil, and the oriental sources of alchemy. In his early days he assisted Balard at the CoEege de France and many years later he served on a committee with Dehray and Fremy to investigate Moissan s discovery of fluorine. See also refs.
