Summary Hexanitrotetrachloroazobenzene is prepared by reacting 90% nitric acid, 30% fuming sulfuric acid, and 98% sulfuric acid with 3,5-dichloroaniline. The reaction mixture is then heated, and then poured over ice to precipitate the product. The product is then collected by filtration, and then recrystallized from an acetone/hexane solvent mixture to yield pure HNTCAB.
