Manganese in Steel

The "periodic acids and periodates are powerful oxidising agents and they will oxidise manganese to manganate(VlI). a reaction used to determine small quantities of manganese in steel. 

The method can be readily adapted to the determination of manganese in steel and in manganese ores.

The amount of manganese in steel is determined by changing it to permanganate ion. The steel is first dissolved in nitric acid, producing Mn2+ ions. These ions are then oxidized to the deeply colored Mn04 ions by periodate ion (I04 ) in acid solution.
