In spite of his criticism of Bunsen, Brauner made good use of his stay in Heidelberg, where he learned about methods that he made use of in the upcoming years, like gas analysis, spectral analysis, and preparation of pure rare earths. Nevertheless, he stdl was looking for a place where he could satisfy his curiosity in the periodic system. Such location became the laboratory of Sir Henry E. Roscoe (1833-1915), Bunsen s pupil and former collaborator, founder of the Manchester School of Chemistry at Owens College, the precursor of the University of Manchester. Brauner, who spent the years 1880 through 1882 there, was encouraged by Roscoe to carry out his own independent experimental research, since then almost solely dedicated to questions associated with the periodic system. [Pg.124]
