Manchester Scale

The Krawiecka Goldberg Scale (or Manchester Scale) is a brief ten-item scale for assessment of changes in the clinical status of patients suffering from psychosis. The items include depression, anxiety, delusions and hallucinations, incoherence, flattened affect, poverty of speech and psychomotor retardation. The absence of items typical of schizoaffective and manic psychoses limits the use of this instrument. It is, however, useful for follow-up of inpatients and outpatients for longer periods of time (Krawiecka et al.y 1977).

As we have seen in earlier chapters, most universities had a chemistry club or society. Near one end of the scale was the Manchester University Chemical Society, which fought the admission of women until 1909 at the other end, the Chemical Club of Cambridge University, which seems to have accepted women members without comment. In fact, two of the early members, Ida Freund and M. Beatrice Thomas, presented research papers to a meeting of the Club in 1904.36...

Like Caro, Ivan Levinstein was educated at the Gewerbeinstitut in Berlin. There, Ivan studied the new aniline dyes, especially aniline red (fuchsine or magenta). In the early 1860s Levinstein Senior set up a factory in Berlin for the manufacture of synthetic dyes and in which the teenaged Ivan appears to have played a role. In 1864, however, Ivan Levinstein arrived in Salford, next to Manchester, and was soon preparing magenta on a small scale. By this time, blue and violet derivatives of magenta were available.

PET that exhibited inhibitory activity in cholesterol biosynthesis in cultured Hep G2 cells was again prepared in a larger scale. The powder was extracted with ethyl acetate (1 10, w/v). The ethyl acetate layer was concentrated and partially purified by silica gel colunm chromatography and preparative TLC (silica gel plates, 20x20-cm, 2-mm thickness n-hexane ethyl acetate=l l, v/v). The silica gel, in the Rf range corresponding to lovastatin, was collected and extracted with ethyl acetate. Further purification was carried out by semipreparative reversed-phase HPLC (C 8, 8.0x250-mm) (22). Final identification of lovastatin in PET was carried out by mass spectrometry (Micromass Platform System Manchester, UK).
