Malpighian layer

Schleim-saure /. mucic acid, -schicht /. layer of sHme or mucilage or mucus specif., mucous layer, Malpighian layer (of the epidermis). -stoff m. sHmy substance mucin. 

Transport of vitamin D3 away from the dermal junction of skin is accomplished by a 52 kDa serum vitamin D-binding protein (DBP). Serum DBP is a member of the a-fetoprotein-albumin super family [36], DBP has high affinity for vitamin D3, but does not bind to its precursors or the products of previtamin D3 side-reactions, lumisterol and tachysterol [37], Accumulation of 7-dehydrocholesterol in skin occurs in sebaceous glands at the malpighian layer of the epidermis, mostly in the stratum spinosum and stratum basal... 

Malpighian layer (stratum germina-tivum) The iimermost layer of the epidermis of mammalian skin, separated from the underlying dermis by a fibrous basement membrane. It is only in this layer of the epidermis that active cell division ( mitosis) occurs. As the cells produced by these divisions age and mature, they migrate upwards through the layers of the epidermis to replace the cells being continuously worn away at the surface. 

Cornbleet melanin is produced by dendritic cells which are derived from the neural crest in the negro skin, these cells give a positive dopa oxidase reaction from the third month of fetal life. Subsequently the melanin is transferred to the cells of the Malpighian layer of the dermis. 

A third series of experiments was done to check the eventual modifications of the intercellular substance (i.s.) in the Malpighian layer and stratum corneum. The antigenic substrate of five of the ichthyotic subjects was treated with serum with anti-i.s. antibodies (titre 1 320) taken from a pemphigus patient (see Figure 5.1). Each section was treated with two different dilutions of pemphigus serum (1 10 and 1 40) and with an anti-IgG conjugate (same characteristics as above). 

Pemphigus antibodies fix to the i.s. in both the Malpighian layer and the stratum corneum (see Table 5.4). It should be noted that the intensity of the fluorescence varies considerably from one substrate to another it also diminishes in relation to the dilution of the serum.
