Maleopimaric acid

Hydrocarbon CXXXIV has also been synthesized by a similar sequence of reactions from abietic acid via maleopimaric acid (CXLI) by Zalkow and Girotra 44, 45). These authors have also converted CXLII, an intermediate obtained en route to hydrocarbon CXXXIV, to CXLIII, which possesses the complete carbocyclic skeleton of atisine in its correct relative configuration. Bell and Ireland had reported previously the synthesis of racemic CXLIII 46). 

Maleopimaric acid and its anhydride were converted into the corresponding peroxides with the aid of an organic peroxide and used as reactive compatibilizers in the extrasion of polyethylene and polyamide 6 [ 102], The ensuing blends showed improved mechanical propaties conpared with those of physical mixtures of the two polymers, suggesting that the rosin-based peroxide had indeed played an active role in enhancing the quality of the interface between the two polymers.

Glovsky et al. observed an anticomplementary activity for levopimaric acid (45), a derivative of abietic acid, and prepared a number of synthetic derivatives such as maleopimaric acid (46) and fumaropimaric acid (47), being Diels-Alder substitution products of levopimaric acid v ith maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, respectively [28, 29]. Maleic acid is cis-butenedioic acid, fumaric acid is trans-butenedioic acid. The synthesized UP prepolymer (Mw = 2250 g/mol, Mn = 879 g/mol. Ip = 2.56) was crosslinked with styrene. Similar mechanical properties (Table 6) were obtained for the chosen commercial product and the tested resin.
