Malcontent

In order to catalog specific undesirable architectural loci under as few rule violations as possible, content or malcontent endohydrogens have been included (when not adjacent to bridge hydrogens) under rule 4. 

An obvious example is the development of a riot situation in a community. Should the local newspapers call attention to the situation and thereby possibly aggravate it by directing other malcontents to the scene In most cases, newspapers withhold such stories during the early stages of mob action,... 

The Fourth Way is intended to begin at a level of being that I call the successful and perceptive malcontent. 

The successful malcontent is not content with the reasonable level of success he has attained in ordinary life, however. Something or many things are wrong. What those things are considered to be is a function of the successful malcontent s perceptiveness and level of development. 

The analyses and practices presented in this book are for perceptive malcontents. They may well increase your discontent and, in some ways, alienate you from everyday life. At the same time it is vital that these ideas and practices not be used as excuses to rationalize failure at ordinary life tasks, or to be cruel and uncaring toward others, for that will pervert their potential and increase your delusions. 

I worry that you, dear reader, may now get overly concerned with questions about whether you are successful enough and perceptive enough to be a successful and perceptive malcontent. If you have read this far you are probably perceptive enough, but how many imperfections are you allowed to have. Is a minimum income level required. What about those really crazy thoughts and feelings you sometimes have... 

This conflict between safety and growth needs is why Gurdjieff insisted that the Fourth Way starts from a reasonable level of success (by commonsense standards) in the ordinary world. The householder, the successful malcontent, has lots of imperfections and craziness in an absolute sense, but by common standards has mastered the tasks of staying alive and reasonably comfortable. He or she has a solid base to start from, and that successful base, satisfaction of lower needs, allows the essential curiosity and desire for self-actualization to emerge. 

After wasting years and money and effort against every group I imagined was the enemy I came to see them all as just mobs of people heading for the same chaos as the rest of us. Their activists who stood out were just loudmouthed, frustrated malcontents like I used to be when I was brawling with them.

So how do we deal with resistance Simply put, we should teach people the skills and give them the tools to handle change, plus support those who set the right examples. This seems logical and intuitive, but it does not always happen. Instead, managers too often try to identify the malcontents and discipline them for not participating.
