Making Order of the Millions

It is a big job to understand the chemistry of all these millions of organic compounds. We will start with the building blocks of organic chemistry, and move on from there to look at some of the marvellous compounds that keep us alive and make ovu lives more comfortable. 

You will see vdiat is meant by these properties when we get started with the series of compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon, called the Alkanes, Alkenes and later the Arenes, and then with compounds containing more than just carbon and hydrogen, some containing oxygen and others nitrogen - Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic acids. Amines, etc. 

The systematic naming of these compounds will follow a world-wide scheme agreed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry
