Magnetic-responsive polymers

Shulai Lu prepared magnetic polymeric composite particles by miniemulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles with hexadecane (HD] as hydrophobe, 2,2 -azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN], and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS] as an emulsifier or sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS] as an ionic comonomer [151], The results showed that miniemulsion polymerization is an effective method for encapsulation of magnetite into a hydrophobic polymer. 

Xu et al. provide a method to fabricate a nanocomposite system with highly integrated functionalities for multimodal biomedical imaging and cancer therapy [154]. They encapsulated hydrophobic upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs] together with iron oxide nanoparticles (lONPs] by using an amphiphilic block copolymer, poly (styrene-block-allyl alcohol] (PS g-b-PAA o]- via a microemulsion method, obtaining an UC-IO Polymer multi- 

Another experiment dealt with the synthesis of tamoxifen-loaded magnetite/poly(L-lactic acid) composite nanoparticles [TMCN), and their in vitro anti-cancer activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. C3Aotoxicity assay revealed that while the Fe304-loaded poly(L-lactic acid) composite nanoparticles exhibit no significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7, 80% of the these cells were killed after incubation for 4 days with TMCN [160].
