Magnesium phthalate

Alternative to m-chloroperbenzoic acid.1 This oxidant has been introduced as a suitable replacement for m-chloroperbenzoic acid, which is no longer available from commercial sources because of hazards in the manufacture. Actually MMPP is a safer reagent than MCPBA, which is shock-sensitive and potentially explosive. MMPP is soluble in water and in low-molecular-weight alcohols. The by-product, magnesium phthalate, is water-soluble and easily removed. It is generally more stable than other percarboxylic acids. It can replace MCPBA for the usual classic oxidations epoxidation, Baeyer-Villiger reactions, and oxidation of amines to N-oxides. [Pg.197]

Pickard, Lewcock and Yates have prepared fenchyl alcohol by the reduction of laevo-rotatory. On conversion into its hydrogen phthalate and fractionally crystallising the magnesium and cinchonine salts, they obtained a fraction, which on saponification yielded Za w-fenchyl alcohol, having a specific rotation of - 15 5°, which is probably the correct value for this figure. [Pg.140]

Its optical rotation has usually been recorded as from - 2° to - 3", but recently Pickard, Lewcock, and Yates have prepared f-isopulegol by fractional crystallisation of the magnesium and cinchonine salts of the hydrogen phthalate, and found its specific rotation to be - 22-2°. [Pg.141]

Isopulegyl hydrogen phthalate melts at 106° and has a specific rotation - 18-7°, and its magnesium salt melts at 115°. [Pg.141]

When N-alkyl-N-allenylaniline 311 was treated with magnesium monoperoxy-phthalate in aqueous MeOH, the corresponding N-oxides 312 were formed initially, which would then undergo sequential [2,3]- and [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement and aromatization to afford N-alkyl-2-ethenylindoles 316 [152],... [Pg.648]

Commercial absolute alcohol is dried with sodium and ethyl phthalate 1 and redistilled. The checkers obtained a considerably lower yield in a run employing alcohol dried over magnesium methoxide. [Pg.45]
