The aim of this chapter is to review the chemistry of chalcogenolates in the last 10 years. The more recent reviews in this field included chalcogenolates of the s-block elements,13,14 early transition metal thiolates,15 metal complexes with selenolate and tellurolate ligands,16 copper(I), lithium and magnesium thiolates,17 functionalized thiolate complexes,18 19 pentafluorobenzenethiolate platinum group compounds,20 tellurium derivatives,21 luminescent gold compounds,22 and complexes with lanthanide or actinide.23... 

Two groups of elements appear in significant concentrations in the original crude oil, associated with well-defined types of compounds. Zinc, titanium, calcium, and magnesium appear in the form of organometallic soaps with surface-active properties, adsorbed in the water-oil interfaces, and act as emulsion stabilizers. However, vanadium, copper, nickel, and part of the iron found in crude oils seem to be in a different class and are present as oil-soluble compounds (Reynolds, 1997). This is the most commonly utilized method for synthesis of transition metal complexes with M —C a bonds. The following substrates are utilized halides, acetylacetonates, acetates, /-electron element alcoholates, as well as organometallic compounds of lithium, magnesium, aluminum, sodium, zinc, mercury, elements of group 14, etc. Ethers and hydrocarbons are used as solvents. In general, the synthesis should be carried out at lower temperatures and under inert atmosphere.
