Software development continues to be, as always, a difficult and fascinating mixture of art, science, black magic, engineering, and hype. Major advancements have been proposed in the past, and not all of them have delivered what was promised. Object technology, open distributed systems, component technology, and rapid iterative development are all current approaches. Catalysis defines an approach that covers all of them. [Pg.28]

The definition goes on to explain magic as, the use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces. 1 This would seem to fit most people s idea of magic, but this definition contains the disclaimer believed. This brings up the second essential problem. Modern science views magic as a superstition. This is in spite of the fact that magic, especially in the form of alchemy, is the ancestor of science and an accepted part of ancient Western culture. Also, many people in the West today and in other parts of the world continue to believe in and practice magic. [Pg.12]

Magic, however, is not simply primitive technology, unchristian, or superstition. It is the origin of both religion and science and has some qualities of each but not entirely of either one. It is a field of study that lies between the two. This may be one reason why both religion and... [Pg.14]
