However, it should be appreciated that less attractive members of the animal world can also provide therapeutic features. For example, maggots, which are the larval form of approximately one-half of the more than 85,000 species of flies, have been and still are occasionally used to treat open wounds—a procedure known as maggot debridement therapy (MDT) or, more commonly, maggot therapy.
