Luttinger

This is a reasonable inference, because site binding is significant only with multivalent cations and strong electrostatic interactions. Under these conditions ion polarization occurs and bonds have some covalent character (Cotton Wilkinson, 1966). This is illustrated by the data of Gregor, Luttinger Loebl (1955a,b). They measured the complexation constants of poly(acrylic acid), 0 06 n in aqueous solution, with various divalent metals, which, as it so happens, are of interest to AB cements (Table 4.1). The order of stability was found to be... [Pg.69]

Most practical cements contain Mg " which is less strongly bound to the polyacrylate than Zn (Gregor, Luttinger Loebl, 1955a). Magnesium oxide forms a paste with PAA which sets to a plastic mass this is not hydrolytically stable, for when placed in water it swells and softens (Hornsby, 1977 Smith, 1982a). Moreover, if ZnO powder contains more than 10% MgO, the resultant cement deteriorates under oral conditions. [Pg.106]

Luttinger-Tisza method is burdened by independent minimization variables, while analysis of the values of the Fourier components F k) makes it possible to immediately exclude no less than half of the variable set and to obtain a result much more quickly. Degeneracy of the ground state occurs either due to coincidence of minimal values of Vt (k) at two boundary points of the first Brillouin zone k = b]/2 and k = b2/2, or as a result of the equality Fj (k) = F2 (k) at the same point k = h/2. The natural consequence of the ground state degeneracy is the presence of a Goldstone mode in the spectrum of orientational vibrations.53... [Pg.14]

Let us present the ground state characteristics of dipoles (interacting as defined by Eq. (2.2.2)) on square, triangular, rectangular, and rhombic lattices. The ground state of a square dipole lattice was first determined by the Luttinger-Tisza method in... [Pg.14]

The authors use optical spectroscopy of gate-induced charge carriers to show that, at low temperature and small lateral electric field, charges become localized onto individual molecules in shallow trap states, but that at moderate temperatures an electric field is able to detrap them, resulting in transport that is not temperature-activated. This work demonstrates that transport in such systems can be interpreted in terms of classical semiconductor physics and there is no need to invoke onedimensional Luttinger liquid physics [168]. [Pg.50]

An important property of the Fermi surface is that the volume (in /c-space) that it encloses is not altered by the interaction between the electrons, unless long-range antiferromagnetic order is set up. This was first shown by Luttinger (1960). We shall make use of this theorem in Chapter 4, Section 3 in discussing metal-insulator transitions due to correlation. [Pg.72]
