Bulk NLO studies on luminescent /uc- ReI(CO)3(a-diimine) + complexes by Yam and co-workers note SHG from surfactant derivatives such as (54) and (55) deposited in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) thin films.110-112 For example, the 532 nm SHG from LB films of the stilbazole derivative (55) is ca. 50% more intense than that from films of the structurally related purely organic salt traiw-.lV-methyl-4-[2-(4-octadecyloxyphenyl)ethenyl]pyridinium iodide.112... [Pg.633]

Luminescent multilayer systems have been reported extensively in Langmuir-Blodgett studies however, reports of intrinsically luminescent self-assembled multilayers are far rarer. Bard has reported on an intriguing luminescent multilayer comprised of alternate layers of 1,6-hexane dithiols and Cu ions (see Figure 5.59),... [Pg.237]

Many examples of hemicyanine dyes with rare-earth tetrakis -diketonate complexes incorporated into Langmuir-Blodgett films have been described in the literature. These rrraterials are discussed in section 7.7. The rare-earth complex does not only improve the qrrality of the LB-films, but better nonlinear optical properties were foimd as well. Pavier et al. (1997) investigated the photoluminescence of LB-films in which ytterbium(III) complexes of pyrazolone ligands were used as counter ions. The fluorescence of the hemicyanine ligand was observed in the visible region, and metal-centered luminescence of Yb + in the near-infrared region. [Pg.200]
