Ultrafiltration hollow-fiber modules are usually made with a shell and tube configuration. The fibers are potted at both ends of the module with the fiber lumen open for recirculation of the process stream (Figure 21). Naturally, strainers or prefilters must be utilized to eliminate plugging of the fibers. At Nude-pore, it has been shown that larger diameter hollow fibers, 1.5 to 3mm in i.d., are much less prone to fouling. Fortunately, all UF hollow fiber systems can be back-washed and are amenable to a number of cleaning techniques. [Pg.422]

The lamellar pattern is believed to be due to the differential rates of fibrillar formation during daily growth cycles [277,278]. Differential compaction of the fibrils provides variations in fibrillar bonding, and determines accessibility or permeability into the inner areas of the fiber. The lumen is the central opening in the fiber that spans its length from base nearly to the tip. It contains the dried residues of cell protoplasm, the only source of noncellulose materials in the fiber other than those in the primary wall. A thin cell wall (lumen wall) provides the inner cell boundary. The lumen opening occupies about 5% of the cross-sectional area of the mature fiber. [Pg.75]

Gating has been proposed to occur via a rotational movement that begins in a portion of the cytoplasmatic C-linker region (red helices in Figure 11). This rotational movement is then transmitted upward, allowing for the rotation of the upper part of helices of the channel (called S6 in Figure 11). These are in contact with the pore lumen, at the outer mouth of the channel. As a result, the pore lumen opens and sodium and calcium ions enter the channel. [Pg.586]

LTO has been shown to be relatively free of damage to the normal vessels and to the RPE (16,17). CNV lesions were created in a rat model, some of which were treated with LTO and some left untreated. Light and electron microscopy showed that three of four untreated CNVs had more than one lumen open and no occlusion, and that one CNY had spontaneously occluded vessels (18). Microscopic examination of eight LTO-treated CNVs showed six with no CNV, one with partial occlusion and one without occlusion. LTO-treated areas next to the CNVs showed normal photoreceptors, RPE, Bruch s membrane, and choriocapillaris (Fig. 3) (15). The preservation of the RPE may be particularly important in AMD, because it is already abnormal and may be more sensitive to additional injury. The intact nature of Bruch s membrane is also important in AMD because breaks are believed to be associated with further proliferation of the CNV into the subretinal space. [Pg.148]
